Opened in 1850, the Colonial Building was originally the seat of government in the nation of Newfoundland. In 1947 when NL joined Canada it became the provincial legislature. Unlike anywhere else in the Dominion or Commonwealth, the governing party sat to the left of the speaker of the house...next to the heaters.
