If we consider rock being a medium that records a moment in time, this outcrop represents a long exposure photograph that has recorded continental stress over a period of time. The quartz veins are really planar sheets that have either been folded and rotated, or have filled in dilational voids along a shear plane. The outcrop surface being near perpendicular to the veins sheets has resulted in the forms seen here.
