In Newfoundland’s boreal forest, where spruce and tamarack trees dominate the landscape, the spruce grouse reigns as a subtle monarch of the coastal wilderness. Adorned in feathers flecked with dusky hues, this unassuming bird moves with quiet confidence across mossy trails and boggy hollows. When hiking, you will most likely experience the joy of hearing the grouse’s wings beat a soft, rhythmic drum, echoing through the forest, long before you see one. I encountered this male spruce grouse along the Skerwink Trail, in Port Rexton, where early morning sightings are common.
